Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

 

"Records of certain sensitive species may not appear here during the breeding season, unless publicised by site managers or where records relate to what are likely to be passage migrants or wandering non-breeding individuals rather than breeders. Species that this generally applies to include (but are not necessarily limited to): Avocet, Bearded Tit, Bittern, Black-necked Grebe, Cetti's Warbler, Garganey. Goshawk (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Honey-buzzard (except from Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint), Marsh Harrier, Mediterranean Gull, Nightingale, Peregrine (except for Nottingham City Centre), Raven, Red Kite and Woodlark (except from Budby Heath). For a range of other species, we will not include specific breeding information - this includes Barn Owl, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Little Ringed Plover, Nightjar, Turtle Dove and Willow Tit. Nevertheless, please submit your sightings anyway."

Budby Pumping Station - Coues's Arctic Redpoll [possible/probable, seen for one minute with 20 Lesser Redpoll, 10:00], COMMON REDPOLL, 150+ Lesser Redpoll, 2 Common Crossbill [flew south], 48 Pink-footed Geese [flew west, 09.20], 2 Shelduck, 2 Goosander, Red Kite [single over Budby Carr 11:00 to 12:00), Water Rail, 13 Common Snipe.

Besthorpe Nature Reserve - GREAT WHITE EGRET [Mons Pool, this afternoon].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - CASPIAN GULL [second-winter, again on Tween Pond, midday at least], FIRECREST [still present in hedgerow near the level crossing on Barton Lane, 10:45].

Thoresby Park - Red Kite [circling over Neatherfield Lane/North Rd, 11:39], 2 Raven [south over Thoresby Lake, 11:45], 4 Brambling, 2 Tree Sparrow [on feeders], Hawfinch [flew high south-west calling, 15:02], probable Yellow-legged Gull, 7 Goosander [Thorsby Lake].

Budby - 2 Red Kite [circling low over the village, 10:40].

Clumber Park - GREAT GREY SHRIKE [South Lawns briefly 10:30, then flew south].

Rufford Country Park - 6+ Hawfinch [six around the walk from the Ice House to the Lake, but mobile mid morning, three in the immediate vicinity of the Ice House, 11:50], mobile mixed flock of Redpoll and Siskin around the lake.

Hoveringham - 2 BLACK REDSTART [adult male, still in the vicinity of the Railway Pit, 13:00], SMEW [redhead, still present on the Railway Pit, this afternnon], GREAT WHITE EGRET, Common Redshank [Sailing Lake, this morning].

Sherwood Forest NNR - COMMON REDPOLL [in with Lesser Redpoll flock along the path to the Major Oak].

Idle Washlands - 15 Common Redshank, 3 Ruff [Hagg Lane Flash], Marsh Harrier [cream crown, Slaynes Lane].

Sherwood - 3 WAXWING [again in Winchester Street CO-OP car park, late morning then flushed by a male Sparrowhawk, c.11:45. They were also reported as feeding briefly on a rowan tree on Perry Road near the prison, 12:20 but were flushed by workmen].

Lenton - Raven [over the University park campus, from the direction of Wollaton park].

Osberton Estate - 8 Corn Bunting [in with Yellowhammer and Tree Sparrow flock, this morning], Also GREAT WHITE EGRET [over, first site record].

Holme Pierrepont - GREATER SCAUP [first-winter drake, still present on the A52 PIT, 16:00], SMEW [redhead, A52 Pit], GREAT WHITE EGRET, Stonechat [Blotts Pit, 11:55], Merlin [male, flew along the Trent between Holme Pierrepoint and LadyBay].

Clumber Park - 9+ Hawfinch [6+ near the chaple with several feeding on the lawn, 3 under a Hawthorn west of the visitor centre and numerous birds in yews behind the chapel, 14:00 - 15:00].

Langford Lowfields - 2 CASPIAN GULL [both first-winter, Phase 3 viewed from southern boundary public footpath, this afternoon], 2 GREAT WHITE EGRET [single Phase 3 this morning, 2 together flew across the site late afternoon dropping onto Phase 2], 123 Pink-footed Geese [heading north-west], Pintail, Peregrine.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2000+Starling [mumuration and roost, over the Delta reed-bed, displaying between 15:50 - 16:20, each evening].

Annesley Pit Top - 200 Pink Footed Geese [over 14:00].

Ravenshead - c.200 Pink Footed Geese [large skein estimated 200+, heading east, 13:40].

Blidworth Woods - c.300 Pink Footed Geese [large skein estimated 300, heading north-east, 13:35].

Bleasby - 200+ Pink Footed Geese [heading south-west towards Nottingham, 13:30].

Idle Washlands - Marsh Harrier [cream crown, Slaynes Lane], c.100 Pink Footed Geese [over heading north-west].

Barton in Fabis/Thrumpton - Merlin [male, flew through Trentside toward Cottages Flash, 13:26], Whooper Swan [1w, in with 135 Mute Swan and single Black Swan in field off Trentside, heading towards Thrumpton].

Bothamsall - Hooded Crow [single, briefly in fields to the south-west, viewed from the blue gates, 100m on right Bothamsall Road, after A614 roundabout, 12:45].
