Scarce and Rare Species Sightings

This page exists as a convenient news service. None of the reports have been verified or checked by the Notts Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

Records of certain species will not appear here during the breeding season - but please send in your reports regardless.

  • Hoveringham - 1 Great White Egret west - towards Lowdham].

Thu 2nd Feb

  • Fiskerton to Farndon - Trent Meadows: Greater White-fronted Goose.

Wed 1st Feb

  • Cotham - Land-fill: 1 Mediterranean Gull [adult winter by entry road midday period].
  • Kilvington Lakes - 1 Barnacle Goose, 1 Dunlin.
  • Besthorpe - 4 Whooper Swan [fields north on Besthorpe NWT Reserve with 2 Mute Swans], 2 Little Egret [NWT Besthorpe South].

Tue 31st Jan

  • Holme Pierrepont - Blott's Pit: 3 Smew [2 male and 1 female].
  • Attenborough Nature Reserve - 1-Bittern [Clifton Pond. flew into centre reed-bed at 14:41 before flying into left-hand reed-bed at 14:50].

  • ClumberPark - 3 Mandarin Duck.
  • Hoveringham - Railway Lakes: 6 Little Egret.
  • Colwick Country Park - 4 Red-crested Pochard [3 drakes], Mandarin Duck [drake].
  • Holme Pierrepont - Blott's Pit: 2 Smew [drake & Redhead].
  • Pinxton - 200+ Pink-footed Goose.
  • Stapleford - 1 Bohemian Waxwing [Pasture Road between number 260 and Deborah Williams' Hair Studio], Grey Wagtail.

Sat 28th Jan

  • Budby Common - Stonechat.
  • Bingham - Little Egret [field north of industrial estate].
  • Bentinck Void - Jack Snipe.
  • Holme Pierrepont - 2 Smew [Blott's Pit].
  • Attenborough Nature Reserve - 1 Greater Scaup [female still present on Church Pond], 1 Smew [female on Main Pond, showing well at times, often with Mallards].

  • Clumber Park - Mandarin Duck.

Thu 26th Jan

  • Bentinck Void - Short-eared Owl, Jack Snipe.
  • Hoveringham - 23 Little Egret. Railway Lake: 9 Little Egret. Sailing Lake: 1 Iceland Gull [adult in roost], 2 Greater White-fronted Goose.

Wed 25th Jan

  • Collingham Pits - 4 Whooper Swan [in field between pits and A1 - with Mutes], 2 Northern Pintail, 1 Little Egret, 4 Green Sandpiper.
  • Clumber Park - 1 Mandarin Duck [female].
  • Sookholme - 1 White Stork [Sports Centre at 11:00].
  • Attenborough Nature Reserve - 1+ Bittern [Clifton Pond - 1 moved between reed-beds at 14:45 and 1 in a different reed -bed at 15:10], 1 Greater Scaup [Church Pond], 1 Smew [female on Main Pond].

  • East Leake - 1 Whooper Swan.
  • Barton-in-Fabis - 1 Greater Scaup [possible drake], 1 Barnacle Goose.
  • Clumber Park - 2 Mandarin Duck [male and female near bridge].
  • Colwick Country Park - 1 Mandarin Duck.

Mon 23rd Jan

  • Holme Pierrepont - Great White Egret [over Blott's Pit at 13:25], Smew [male and female].
  • Clayworth Common - 15 Whooper Swan.

  • Beckingham Marshes - 1 Short-eared Owl.

  • Gringley Carr - Hen Harrier [female low over farmland from river bank].
  • Gedling Pit - 1 Short-eared Owl.

Thu 19th Jan

  • Dunham Pools - Brent Goose.
  • Rufford Country Park - 1 Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Red-crested Pochard [female].
  • Clumber Park - 64 Gadwall, 1 Common Goldeneye [female], 2 Mandarin Duck.
  • Sookholme - White Stork [John Fretwell Sports Centre].
  • Hoveringham - 27 Greater White-fronted Goose, [south bank of Trent - opposite Ferry Farm Park], 2 Green Sandpiper, 1 Iceland Gull [adult in roost on Sailing Lake], 1 Mediterranean Gull [adult in roost].

Wed 18th Jan

  • Clumber Park - Hawfinch.
  • Clifton Grove - Greater White-fronted Goose.
  • Attenborough Nature Reserve - 1-Bittern [Delta Hide 12:55], 13 Greater White-fronted Goose [Clifton Pond 14:15].
  • Wollaton - 2 Ring-necked Parakeet [Ranelagh Grove].

Tue 17th Jan

  • Kersall - Common Raven.
  • Hoveringham - Iceland Gull [adult], Yellow-legged Gull [roost], 2 Green Sandpiper.
  • Besthorpe NWT - South: 1 Eurasian Curlew, 2 Northern Pintail [pair], 4 Whooper Swan [adults in field twixt Collingham and Langford - with Mute Swans].
  • Eakring Meadows - 1 Common Raven [visiting fox carcass in field edge].

Mon 16th Jan

  • Hoveringham - 16 Little Egret, [large Railway Lake], 17 Greater White-fronted Goose.
  • Welbeck Lake - 500+ Pink-footed Goose.
  • Bentinck Void - 2 Short-eared Owl.
  • Wollaton - 2 Ring-necked Parakeet [north along Brendon Road towards Beechdale from Wollaton Park direction].
  • Holme Pierrepont Blott's Pit: Pink-footed Goose, Smew.
  • Skegby - c.275 Pink-footed Goose [north-west at 08:45].
  • Calverton - Merlin [female at sewage farm].
  • Hoveringham - 1 Iceland Gull [adult in roost], 1 Mediterranean Gull [adult in roost], 15 Yellow-legged Gull [in roost], 29 Little Egret.
