Welcome to the Website of the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers

This page will be updated on a daily basis, to provide a convenient news service to scarce & rare birds found within the County Nottinghamshire.

The Sightings page and @Nottsbirders Twitter feed are intended to alert birders to scarcer species that they might be interested in seeing within the County.

Records of more common species are still very important, but should preferably be submitted to the county Recorder Andy Hall. These records will then be added to the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers data-base, to be included in the monthly Newsletter and Annual Reports.

None of these reports have been verified or checked by the Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers' Records Committee.

Records of certain species will not appear here during the breeding season - but please send in your reports regardless.

Idle Washlands - Glossy Ibis [Just SW of Misson, between River Idle and flood bank, 10:00 to 15:00 at least. SK685937].

Besthorpe NWT - Ruff [Mons Pool].

Newstead and Annesley CP - Little Ringed Plover and 3 Reed Warbler.

East Leake - 2 Cuckoo [calling, one up towards the golf course between East Leake and Gotham, and the other to the west]. Also 2 Little Egret [moving west along East Leake brook].

Sunday 29th May

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Garganey [1s drk, with drake Teal on Chainbridge Scrape 18:30], Cuckoo [Chainbridge Wood], Yellow Wagtail, 2 Common Redshank, Little Ringed Plover and 3 Ringed Plover [Tiln North].

Barton in Fabis - 2 Corn Bunting [Barton Lane, 14:00].

Saturday 28th May

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 3 Hobby [over Neatholme Scrape], Cuckoo [calling from The Willows], 2 Yellow Wagtail [on field East of Conservation Lake].

Ranby - White Stork [circling over the A1 at Ranby for 5 minutes then lost to view, 11.10].

Burton Joyce - Red Kite over and Lesser Whitethroat.

Strelley - Red Kite [over, 11:00].

Arnold - Red Kite [over the Middlebeck estate, this morning].

Barton in Fabis - Raven [over Branshill, 09:00], Little Ringed Plover [Cottages Flash, 13:40] and Corn Bunting [on wires along Barton Lane].

Idle Washlands - Red-necked Phalarope [Hagg Lane Flash 08:30, but flew off possibly into S.Yorks and was lost from view].

Friday 27th May

Widmerpool - Corncrake [on minor road between Widmerpool and Wysall, aprox 1 mile from Widmerpool. Ran across the road in front of observer at less than 10 yds range, 17:30].

Lenton - Ring-necked Parakeet [Highfields Park, University Boulevard. Waterfall end of the lake, 17:00].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 2 Hobby [Chainbridge Scrape].

Idle Washlands - Glossy Ibis [just South/West of Misson, on flood South of Slaynes lane. SK685937].

Thursday 26th May

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Red Kite [over Branshill, Clifton Grove viewed from the Tower Hide, 17:14]. Also Goosander [flew through Clifton Pit].

Hoveringham - Red Kite.

Sherwood Forest NNR - Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Common Redstart and 2 churring Nightjar this evening.

Netherfield Lagoons - Raven [over the Slurry Lagoon, 11:45]. Also Hobby.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Glossy Ibis [through towards Neatholme Scrape, 10:17, and a second report by the River Idle, midday].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Black Tern [Sailing Pit, 11:05], Garganey [drk, Clifton Pit, 11:18] and Red Kite [from Tower Hide, 16:57].

Gotham - Red Kite [Gotham Hills, 10:30].

Tuesday 24th May

Barton in Fabis - 2 Raven [Cottages Flash, 19:30]. Also Common Redshank earlier.

Langford Lowfields RSPB - 4 Hobby [showing well from the 360 viewing screen, 13:45].

Langar - Red kite [through, 13:00].

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe [still on the Railway Pit, 10:30 - 11:30].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Garganey [drk, Clifton Pit from Tower Hide this morning]. Also Arctic Tern [briefly, Clifton Pit midday] and Hobby.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Glossy Ibis [flew North over Neatholme Scrape, 09:00].

Besthorpe NWT - Glossy Ibis [briefly on Mons Pool, 06:50. Then flew North and dropped into Meering Marsh, before flying North and appeared to drop into the Sailing Lake at Girton Pits 07:20].

Monday 23rd May

Langford Lowfields RSPB - Glossy Ibis [from 19:15 to 19:40, when it flew towards Collingham Pits]. Also 2 Hobby and 2 LBB Gull.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Bittern [from chainbridge lane viewpoint, this afternoon].

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe [injured bird, still present on the Railway Pit, 13:05].

Netherfield Lagoons - Cuckoo [calling 12:00 - 14:00, and showing well]. Also 2 Hobby.

Newstead Abbey CP - 4 Raven [North side, near Ravenshead].

Kilvington Lakes - Ringed Plover and Red-crested Pochard [West Lake].

Newstead and Annesley CP - Short-eared Owl [this morning, with 2 present yesterday].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Glossy Ibis [flew over Clifton Pit and over Wet Marsh towards Main Pond, then lost from view, 08:03].

Sunday 22nd May

Kilvington Lakes - 2 Whooper Swan [West Lake, late afternoon at least]. Also Bar-headed Goose.

Langford Lowfields RSPB - 4 Hobby [mid afternoon].

Gringley Carr - Corn Bunting and Yellow Wagtail [this afternoon].

Netherfield Lagoons - Osprey [circling the Slurry Lagoon/Gravel Pits for 3-4mins before heading off south-east, 09:43]. Also Cuckoo.

Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint - Osprey [Middle Lake, 09:30].

Barton in Fabis - 3 Corn Bunting, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 5 Yellow Wagtail and Hobby [this morning].

Misson - Spotted Flycatcher [this morning].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Osprey [low through the reserve, then flew off high down the Trent, 08:30].

Calverton - Cuckoo [calling Springwater Golf Course, 16:35].

Holme pierrepont - 2 Red Kite [over drifting towards Skylark Nature Reserve, this afternoon].

Kilvington Lakes - 4 Sanderling, Ringed Plover and Little Ringed Plover.

Misterton - 6 Corn Bunting, 15 Yellow Wagtail, 2 Oystercatcher, Common Redshank [Cornley Carr, this afternoon].

Gringley Carr - Hobby, 7 Corn Bunting and 11 Yellow Wagtail.

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe [still on the Railwayway Pit, 13:30], Greenshank [on the Sailing Lake Flash]. Also Red-crested Pochard, 4 Oystercatcher and 7+Yellow Wagtail.

Friday 20th May

Barton in Fabis - 3 Corn Bunting, Little Ringed Plover and 5 Yellow Wagtail [A453 Balancing Pond, 16:00].

Gringley Carr - Hobby, 9 Corn Bunting, 6 Yellow Wagtail.

Newark - Red Kite [circling low over, mobbed by 3 crows, 12:50].

Gunthorpe - Common Sandpiper [River Trent west of Gunthorpe].

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe [still present on the Railway Pit, this morning]. Also Dunlin. Garganey [drk, on the Sailing Lake, this morning], Greenshank and Common Redshank [on the flash] and Red Kite over.

Thursday 19th May

Cuckney - Cuckoo [from woodland near Cuckney, calling regularly between 18:45 and 19:30].

Beeston - Marsh Harrier [cream crown, flew South/West over the Boots complex towards the Trent, 17:40].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Hobby [Clifton Pit, 17:30] and large numbers of Swift.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Osprey [West over Neatholme Fen 16:20] and Hobby [over Chainbridge Wood].

Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint - Osprey [Middle Lake, 15:32].

Sutton in Ashfield - Hobby [over the A38 near Sutton Lawn this afternoon].

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe [still on the Railway Pit, late morning] and Adult Little Gull through. Also Greenshank [Sailing lake flash].

Wednesday 18th May

Bestwood - Whinchat [Bestwood Pit Top, 17:50].

Barton in Fabis - Harrier sp [male, flew low over the A453 Balancing Pond, 17:15].

Gotham - Red Kite [West over farmland between Gotham and East Leake, early evening].

Kilvington Lakes - 7 Ringed Plover.

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe still present, Dunlin and Spotted Flycatcher [Railway Pit] and Greenshank [Sailing Lake Flash].

Tuesday 17th May

Holme Pierrepont - Avocet [Blotts Pit, late morning to early evening at least]. Also 3 Dunlin, Oystercatcher, Greenshank, Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover and Hobby.

Besthorpe NWT - Red Kite [through South, late afternoon], 3 Ringed plover, 2 Dunlin, 2 Common tern, and lesser whitethroat.

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe [still present on the Railway Pit] and Garganey [drk, briefly on the Sailing Lake].

Stapleford - 2 Honey Buzzard [bird information service report, over South/West, 10:55].

Netherfield Lagoons - 2 Cuckoo [around the Gravel Pits, this morning]. 20 Reed Wabler [ singing males], and Hobby [over the Slurry Lagoon, this afternoon].

Monday 16th May

Hazelford Ferry/Gibsmere - 3 Whimbrel [this evening].

Holme Pierrepont - Garganey [drk, Blotts Pit, late afternoon], 3 Whimbrel [dropped into Blotts Pit this evening]. Also Little Ringed Plover and 2 Hobby.

Burton Joyce - Hobby and Peregrine [over this afternoon].

Langford Lowfields RSPB - 2 Hobby [showing well from the 360 viewing screen, this morning] and Cuckoo [calling from other side of th river].

Kilvington Lakes - Sanderling [West Lake, 10:30]. Also drk Red-crested Pochard and male Sparrowhawk.

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Hobby, Cuckoo, Common Redshank and 2 lesser black backed Gull [this morning].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Honey Buzzard [South over Neatholme Fen, mobbed by two Common Buzzard, 09:55], 2 Arctic Tern Neatholme Scrape early morning, also Raven [North over Chainbridge, 13:15].

Netherfield Lagoons - [Notts Birders walk, with 71 species recorded] , including Common Redshank, Little Ringed Plover, Ringed Plover, Cuckoo, Peregrine, Grey Partridge and ten species of warbler.

Saturday 14th May

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Purple Heron [Tween Pond/Wet Marsh area, perched on Willows, c19:00, but no further sigh by 21:30]. 3 Black Tern [Tween Pond, 20:15], 2 Garganey [drk's, Clifton Pit from Tower Hide, 10:40], 5 Pochard [4 drk's Clifton Pit, 21:00].

Barton in Fabis - Little Ringed Plover, 6 Yellow Wagtail and Corn Bunting [A453 Balancing Pond, early evening].

Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint - Osprey [fishing on Middle Lake 16:30, After 4 attempts flew off with fish towards Top Lake].

Collingham Pits - Arctic Tern [on Ferry Lane Lake] plus 14 Common Tern, then all flew North, 16:35].

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Temminck's Stint [still on Blotts Pit, 15:30 at least], Wood Sandpiper [Blotts Pit, 12:00 to 15:30 at least], 4 Black Tern [A52 Pit, 10:15], Black Tern, 3 Arctic Tern and a Hobby [Blotts Pit, midday] Also 2 Dunlin, Common Sandpiper and Greenshank [Blotts Pit].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 2 Arctic Tern [Neatholme Scrape]

Hoveringham - Black-necked Grebe [on the Railway Pit this morning. It appears to possibly have an injured wing].

Thursday 12th May

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Temminck's Stint [showing well on Blotts Pit, this evening]. Also today Black Tern, 3 Arctic Tern, 6 Dunlin, 4 Ringed Plover, 4 Common Sandpiper, Greenshank, 2 Common Redshank and Hobby.

Collingham Pits - 2 Black Tern [Ferry Lane Lake, this evening]. Also 12 Arctic Tern [Ferry Lane Lake this morning].

Calverton - Tree pipit [Calverton colliery/watchword plantation northern boundary].

Langford Lowfields RSPB - 4 Black Tern, Arctic Tern, 2 Hobby, Marsh Harrier and 2 Yellow Wagtail [11:00 -13:30].

Clifton - White Stork [circling high over the estate, 11:30 then drifted slowly South].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 4 Black Tern and 6 Arctic Tern [Coneries, 10:34]. Also Dunlin and Little Ringed Plover [Ridge and Furrow]. 3 Black Tern and single Arctic Tern [still present this afternoon].

Hoveringham - 2 Knot, 1 Grey Plover, Ringed Plover, Dunlin, 4 Black Tern and pair Red-crested Pochard [Sailing Lake/Flash, this morning], 3 Greenshank, Dunlin, Ringed Plover and Red-crested Pochard [Railway Pit].

Wednesday 11th May

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Temminck's Stint [Blotts Pit this afternoon to 19:50 at least]. Also Greenshank, 2 Dunlin, 4+ Common Redshank, 3 Ringed Plover, 2 Little Ringed Plover, 4 Common Sandpiper [All Blotts Pit]. Also 2 Black Tern, Arctic Tern, 2 Hobby and Whimbrel [A52 Pit, late afternoon].

Kilvington Lakes - Dunlin, Common Sandpiper, 3 Oystercatcher and Peregrine [West lake, this evening].

Collingham Pits - 4 Arctic Tern [Ferry Lane Lake, 16:00].

Idle Valley Nature Reserve - Cuckoo [calling around RLC Centre car park this morning] and Marsh Harrier [female, along river near Bailey bridge just North of Bellmoor lake].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 Black Tern [Tween Pond, 07:15] and 2 Dunlin [Gull Island, Clifton Pit], 4 Black Tern [Tween Pond, 08:00, then moved to the Sailing Pit], 2 Common Redshank, 6 Arctic Tern and 4 Black Tern [this evening].

Newstead and Annesley CP - Arctic Skua [adult pale morph, landed briefly on the water, then flew North/West early morning]. Also Whimbrel, Arctic Tern and Common Redshank.

Hoveringham - 2 Temminck's Stint [Sailing Lake, barrier Flash from 04:50 this morning]. Also 2 Grey Plover and 6 Ringed Plover [barrier flash]. Little Tern [briefly this morning, in the North/East end of the Sailing Lake, then flew off East], 30 Arctic Tern [total passing through all morning], 9 Black Tern [10:40 to 13:00 at least].

Tuesday 10th May

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 9 Turnstone [2 through Clifton Pit, 09:45, 2 through Clifton Pit, 12:30 and 5 Clifton Pit 19:14, then flew South/East 20:00], Knot [through Clifton Pit, 17:00], Garganey [drk, Clifton Pit, 12:30], 6 Black Tern and 2 Arctic Tern [Sailing Pit, 20:00] Greenshank [briefly, Ridge and Furrow, this morning] and 2 unidentified wader [possibly Sanderling, through Clifton Pit, 17:00].

Holme Pierrepont - Knot, Turnstone and 18 Common Redshank [Blotts Pit, this evening].

Langford Lowfields RSPB - Wood Sandpiper [Phase 3, this afternoon]. Also Bar-tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Greenshank, Common Redshank and Common Sandpiper.

Kings Mill Reservoir - Dunlin, Common Sandpiper, c.100 Swift and c.150 Sand Martin.

Hoveringham - 2 Temminck's Stint [Sailing Lake, barrier Flash this morning to 15:30 at least], 2 Grey Plover and 12 Ringed Plover [Sailing Lake, barrier Flash], Bar-tailed Godwit [through West, 08:30], 10 Arctic Tern [through East, 08:40], 9 Black Tern [flew in 09:00, still present 13:30], Greenshank [through North] and Cuckoo].

Netherfield Lagoons - 6 Greenshank [on the floods across the river, upstream of the railway bridge, this morning].

Idle Washlands - Turnstone [Hagg Lane] and 2 Whimbrel [through this morning].

Newstead and Annesley CP - 6 Turnstone [dropped in, 10:30], Whimbrel [through North/East, this morning], Marsh Harrier [through North]. Also Curlew through, Greenshank and 2 Ringed Plover.

Monday 9th May

Hoveringham - 2 Temminck's Stint [on the Sailing Lake, 19:43] Also 3 Grey Plover [ 2 on the Sailing Lake barrier flash early morning only, and 1 through North/East, 08:30], 21 Common Redshank [through North/East, 08:30], Whimbrel [Sailing Lake barrier flash, 18:45 till dusk], 13 Ringed Plover and 6 Dunlin. Also 1 Grey Plover, 1 Dunlin and 1 Common Sandpiper [Railway Pit, this morning].

Holme Pierrepont - 2 Temminck's Stint [Blotts Pit, 18:30 to 19:00 with both birds still present when the observer left site]. Also 2 Greenshank, 2 Common Redshank, 5 Ringed Plover, 6 Little Ringed Plover, Dunlin and 9 Common Tern.

Netherfield Lagoons - Great Reed Warbler [singing in the North/East corner of the Slurry Lagoon, 08:45 to 20:00]. Also 2 Temminck's Stint [on the opposite side of the Trent, 18:30 to 18:43 then flew West].

Collingham Pits - 4 Greenshank [pools on West side of Ferry Lane Lake, this evening].

Scrooby - 3 Bar-tailed Godwit [on small private pond, opposite Scrooby top quarry access, 16:00. No public access, view only from gate]

Idle Washlands - Black-tailed Godwit [Hagg Lane Flash].

Kilvington Lakes - Sanderling and Grey Plover [West Lake, 11:00].

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - Wood Sandpiper [Neatholme Fen, this evening], 3 Greenshank, 12 Ringed Plover [10 on Tiln North], 5 Grey Plover [4 flew East at 19:25]. Also this morning Bar-tailed Godwit, 4 Grey Plover, 2 Greenshank, Black-tailed Godwit and Whimbrel.

Kings Mill Reservoir - Garganey [drk, this morning].

Newstead and Annesley CP - 9 Greenshank and 1 Common Redshank [through this morning] Also 2 tundra Ringed Plover.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Little Tern [Tween Pond, 05:50 to 20:00 at least], Black-necked Grebe [Coneries, early morning to 20:00 at least, showing well from the dipping platform this evening], Black Tern [still on Tween, 20:00] Also 7 Greenshank [Clifton Pit, early afternoon], Ringed Plover [Ridge and Furrow] Hobby [over the Delta Reedbed, 20:25] and Cuckoo [near the church this morning, and Wet Marsh this evening].

Sunday 8th May

Holme Pierrepont - c50 Black Tern [A52 Pit, 15:00 - 20:35 at least, with small flocks seen heading off high East, 20:35]. Also 4+ Arctic Tern.

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - c69 Black Tern [19 at Bellmoor which flew East after being flushed by a Hobby. At the same time 20 were noted at Neatholme Fen. With an incredible 69 Neatholme Fen, 17:30]. Also 2 Grey Plover [still Neatholme Fen], Spotted Flycatcher [along river at Bellmoor, 08.00]. Also 2 Dunlin and 2 Cuckoo.

Beeston - White Stork [thermaling over fields/Trent, Beeston Marina. Moving towards Attenborough NR, 14:30].

Hoveringham Railway Pit - Grey Plover [Adult summer, along the gravel edge below the pylon immediately North/East of the copse, 13:40 at least], Whimbrel [on the grass bank, East of the Pylon, 14:00], 2 Common Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover and Arctic Tern through.

Kilvington Lakes - 1 Ruff [West Lake] and Common Sandpiper.

Langford Lowfields RSPB - Black Tern [from the 360 viewpoint, 11:38].

Mansfield Woodhouse - Red Kite [through South, 09:00].

Attenborough Nature Reserve - c22 Black Tern [6 on Clifton pit, 13 over Wheatear field and 3 on Tween this morning. Also 2 on Tween and 3 on Main Pond this evening], Grasshopper Warbler [upstream of the riverside cottages], also small flock of around 6 Tree Sparrow.

Saturday 7th May

Lound [Idle Valley Nature Reserve] - 2 Grey Plover [Tiln North, 13:20], 2 Black Tern [Bellmoor Lake and Neatholme Fen, this morning] and 2 Dunlin [Neatholme Fen].

Hoveringham - Grey Plover, Whimbrel and Cuckoo [Railway Pit].

Clifton - Hobby [chasing House Matin, around brinkhill/woodbridge ave area, this afternoon].

Hickling - Spotted flycatcher [briefly then flew West, this morning].

Collingham Pits - Spotted Flycatcher [this morning].

Sherwood Forest NNR - 20+ Crossbill, up to 6 singing Common Redstart, good numbers of Tree Pipit.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - Black Tern [Tween, 07:15 - 15:00 at least]. Also Cuckoo and Tawny Owl.

Attenborough Nature Reserve - 2 Whiskered Tern [Originally found on the Windsurfing Pit, Long Eaton, 09:30, then relocated to the ANR on Coneries/Sailing Pit 13:45 before moving to Tween, with both birds present till dusk]. Also 2 Black Tern [single on Main Pond, 08:10, and 2 on Tween Pond/Clifton Pit, this evening], Ringed Plover [Ridge and Furrow] and 2 Black-tailed Godwit [Tween, before relocating to Cottages Flash, late evening].

Barton in Fabis - 2 Black-tailed Godwit and 2 Little Ringed Plover [Cottages Flash this evening].

Collingham Pits - Garganey [drk, South/West corner of Ferry Lane Lake, 18:55] Also Channel Wagtail [again this afternoon].

Hoveringham - Grey Plover and Whimbrel [Railway Pit, present all day]. Also 2 Black Tern [Sailing Lake, 11:00 - 17:30 at least].

Collingham Pits - Channel Wagtail [again this evening, on bare potato fields south of Ferry Lane Lake].

Holme Pierrepont - 4 Ruff, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 2 Common Redshank and Yellow Wagtail [Blotts Pit, late afternoon].
