Wind Farm on the Lewis
As you may know from the television and newspapers there is a proposal to build the worlds largest onshore windfarm on the Isle of Lewis.
The map shows the proposed windfarm overlaid on to a map of Nottinghamshire to give some idea of its scale. The wind farm is marked in red.
According to the developer's own environmental assessment, the impacts include (for the Eagle, Merlin and Diver numbers these are presumably over the 25 year life cycle of the farm):
- 50 golden eagles lost due to collision with turbines
- 50 merlins lost due to collision
- 75 to 150 red throated divers lost due to collision
- Minimum of 314 pairs of dunlin lost of the Great British population due to habitat loss and displacement (the RSPB believe this figure is more likely to be 640 pairs)
- Minimum of 350 pairs of golden plover lost due to habitat loss and displacement (the RSPB believe 700 pairs in a worst case scenario)
Further information about what is proposed (and how to object) is available from:
- The RSPB website, where the RSPB will be posting information as well as our objection letter as soon as we have had a chance to review the developer’s Environmental Statement (which runs to hundreds of pages!)
